Fiji players celebrate their victory over Tonga which guarantees them their Division A place at next year's IRB U19 World Championship

Fiji players celebrate their Division B final victory over Tonga

Fiji 22-14 Tonga

Fiji rallied after conceding an early try to defeat fellow Pacific Islanders Tonga in the Division B final and clinch promotion in the IRB Under 19 World Championship with a battling performance at the Dubai Exiles RFC.

Their leading points scorer Seremaia Tagicakibau was again a key man for Fiji, the wing finishing with a try, two conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 12 points, taking his tally to 56 for the tournament.

However this was a team effort based on solid defence and attacking flair as Fiji, who had to qualify for this tournament, secured their fifth victory in 17 testing days.

Tonga, who finished fourth last year, were out of the blocks very quickly and took the lead in only the second minute when fly half Richard Havili unlocked the defence with a show and go, slicing through from 15 metres out for a solo try close to the posts, converted by scrum half Samisioni Fisilau.

The Tongans enjoyed a clear edge in the opening quarter as they effectively shepherded Fiji across the field with their drift defence, were rock solid in the tackle and also had more penetration with the ball in hand.

Wing Viliami Hakalo almost conjured up a second try for Tonga, his grubber kick behind the defence just bobbling out of play, before Fiji started to gradually haul themselves into the game by recycling possession for long periods.

Eventually they were able to make territory count when flanker Sakenasa Aca received a miss pass on the left touch some 10 metres out and danced inside the last defender before running around to make the conversion angle easier for Tagicakibau.

This kick ensured that the sides went in level at half time, but the deadlock was broken with a straightforward 25-metre penalty by Tagicakibau early in the second half as Fiji hit the front for the first time.

That lead was consolidated when Tagicakibau made a superb break from the 22 to take play to the Tonga line, possession was then recycled right with full back Iliesa Keresoni putting lock James Brown over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Tagicakibau missed a 35-metre penalty attempt as Tonga battled to break out of their own half, but further points were not long in coming for the wing.

His neat chip was collected on the run by Keresoni, who drew the final defender with a deft pass to put Tagicakibau away under the posts for a try he would also convert.

Tonga though refused to lie down, having the final word with a converted try by replacement Semisi Fotu in injury time. This score though came too late to derail Fiji’s promotion charge into Division A for next year’s event.

QUOTES

Fiji coach Josua Toakula: “We came here not only to compete but to get promotion to Division A. We achieved that mission and we thank God for it. We also thank our supporters who were here in good numbers. Next year I do not see any problem being in Division A.”

Fiji captain Andrew Durutalo: “We stuck to our game plan and that’s why we won. The plan was not to get involved in too many rucks and to move the ball wide. Sevens rugby accounted for more than 50 per cent of our success, it was a large influence in the way we moved the ball and in creating space out wide.”

Tonga coach Fe’ao Vakata: “Fiji deserved their win. We let Fiji back into the game after our first half try. We made mistakes in the second half.”

Tonga captain Paula Havea: “Our boys put in a great effort, they really wanted to win but after the first try in the second half some heads went down.”
