Canada 3-22 Italy

Italy have been crowned Division B champions at the IRB Under 19 World Championship 2007 after defeating Canada 22-3 in a tense and physical final at Shaw’s Bridge in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Friday 20 April.

With Italian rugby already on a high in 2007 after their senior national side enjoyed their best ever campaign in the RBS Six Nations, their next generation of players gave cause for further celebrations with a performance full of grit and determination.

The Italian backline have looked dangerous throughout the tournament and they struck again in the 10th minute following a break down the right wing by prop Massimiliano Ravalle. From the resulting ruck, fly half Riccardo Bocchino received the ball and passed to captain Alberto Chiesa.

The centre broke through the Canadian defence before taking on their full back. Chiesa was tackled five metres from the line, but he had the strength to drag tackler over the line with him to score the opening points of the final. Bocchino converted to give Italy an early 7-0 lead.

Canada though also had their captain Nathan Hirayama to thank for opening their account, the fly half slotting a penalty between the posts in the 15th minute. However this was cancelled out by a penalty from Bocchino to give Italy a 10-3 advantage at half time.

Impressive backline

The second half saw Canada try to put more pressure on the Italian defence, but too many handling errors combined with an organised defence prevented them from getting the points needed to get themselves back into the game.

Instead it was Italy who stretched their lead after only two minutes of the second half when their strong forward pack drove full back Francesco Fiorani driven over the line for his side’s second try. The conversion was missed by Bocchino, but the try put them more than a single score ahead.

This seemed to give Italy a new wave of confidence and their backline began putting a series of moves together that caused the Canadian defence a lot of trouble. One of these saw scrum half Luca Martinelli score Italy’s third try when the backline took advantage of a disorganised defence after their forwards had done well to turnover the ball.

The final whistle sparked Italian celebrations, having improved on their third place finish in 2006. Canada can also say the same as they were beaten 35-8 by Italy in the third place playoff last year and will look to take positives away from the tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

QUOTES:

Italy coach Stefano Romagnoli: “It is important for Italian rugby and the international team. We won a good match and gained promotion and some players were excellent. Every player has been the player of the tournament.”

Italian flanker Alex Leo: “The lads played really well today and I’d like to thank the coaches. It was brilliant. The lads deserved a big lead today, again it was brilliant. We’ll keep training hard and keep the togetherness of the team which was key in the tournament. Against Tonga was almost like a final as well as we could have been out.”

Canada coach Gary Johnston: “We came here with the expectations of moving up to Division A, but obviously that isn’t going to happen. I think Italy benefit greatly with playing in the Six Nations, but I’m still very pleased. “

Canada captain Nathan Hirayama: “Definitely a huge disappointment. We came into the game confident, but that’s the way it goes. The standard of the tournament has been high but it comes down to the game plan and they countered ours. They where the toughest defence we came up against. The atmosphere was great and there are lots of memories.”
